BIOS
What is it actually?
This acronym stands for Basic Input-Output System. We are talking about a set of instructions which are very important, because without them it wouldn’t be possible to initialize computer hardware such as keyboard, mouse, HDD, video adapter and other devices. These instructions are stored on a small ROM (Read Only Memory) chip on a motherboard. BIOS functions are usually to test if computer hardware is working properly before OS should be loaded and the instructions on how to load computer devices. BIOS also consists of CMOS (Configuration Memory Operating System) setup that will help you to configure certain hardware and system settings.
The role of BIOS
This program goes with Windows based computers and in a way represents check point for your PC. So the central processing unit (CPU) is “talking” to BIOS before OS is loaded, asking him if everything is ok with all devices and hardware connections. When the answer is yes, BIOS makes sure that the operating system is safely ” injected” into your PC’s memory. But this is just a part of what BIOS is doing. It is also acting as a connecting bridge between your PC’s devices and the CPU. Therefore, when something related to a specific device changes, you will need to update your BIOS to reflect the change.
Changing BIOS settings
After you are starting your PC, you will be given an option to press and hold down the key on your keyboard to access your BIOS. That means thay BIOS has a User Interface and you can change some of these settings. For example you can configure hardware, decide with which device your computer will boot, change passwords etc. Of course, if you use your CMOS/BIOS settings improperly you could be facing some blue screens and confusing situations ending in your “mean” machine stop responding. So, better call someone who knows something, or at least do some research before you start experimenting with BIOS.
BIOS the beginnings
It all started with Gary Arlen Kidall who was an American computer scientist, an inventor of CP/M operating system. He used the term Basic Input-Output System (BIOS) for the first time in 1975, when he incorporated it in his operating system. Today we have independent companies that are developing BIOS technology, like Phoenix Technologies, American Megatrends, Insyde Software etc…In order to be up to date with your BIOS, you should download drivers. Just check whether you need BIOS driver for Intel, Gigabyte, Asus, HP, Acer, Acorp, Dell, Nvidia, Biostar, Hercules or some other manufacturer.
